Purpose-led Sustainability

FairPrice Group’s recognition as a Top Sustainability Company is anchored in a commitment that dates back to its founding in 1973. Sustainability is not treated as a trend or a standalone initiative, but as an integral part of the Group’s core DNA, guided by its brand purpose of making every day a little better for all in Singapore.

This belief shapes how FairPrice Group operates across its entire ecosystem, from governance and accountability to store design and product selection. By championing the idea that sustainability and affordability are mutually reinforcing, FairPrice Group demonstrates that consumers do not always have to choose between cost and making responsible choices that are easy on the planet.

Setting the Benchmark with Sustainable Store Design

A defining milestone in FairPrice Group’s sustainability journey is the opening of FairPrice City Square Mall in 2024 — its most sustainable supermarket to date. Designed as a benchmark for future stores, the outlet integrates recycled fixtures, energy-efficient lighting and cooling systems, CO₂ refrigerants, and a zero-food-waste policy.

Collectively, these innovations enable the store to operate with a 30 per cent lower carbon footprint compared to the Group’s average supermarket. This flagship location serves as an example of how environmentally conscious design can be scaled across a large retail network, with similar features already being progressively rolled out to other stores.

Driving Impact Through Supplier Partnerships

FairPrice Group recognises that meaningful sustainability progress cannot be achieved in isolation. One of the key challenges it identified was enabling suppliers — particularly SMEs — to embark on their own sustainability journeys.

To address this, the Group launched its inaugural Supplier Sustainability Education Programme, equipping partners with the knowledge and tools to adopt more sustainable practices. In parallel, FairPrice Group launched the Queen Bee Suppliers Decarbonisation Programme in 2025 to support suppliers in their decarbonisation efforts. By building awareness, driving action and accelerating collective impact, the Group is extending sustainability beyond its own operations.

Engaging Communities Through Everyday Sustainable Choices

FairPrice Group actively fosters a culture of sustainability among consumers through innovative, accessible and rewarding initiatives to make Every Day, A Little Better. One standout example is the FPG Go Green Challenge — a four-week omnichannel campaign that used gamification to educate consumers on eco-labels and responsible sourcing.

Through interactive games and incentives, over 117,000 consumers learned to recognise certified products, while vouchers encouraged purchases from a curated list of more than 1,300 sustainable items. The campaign also successfully converted 3,800 first-time buyers to sustainable products, demonstrating the power of education paired with incentives.

Beyond campaigns, initiatives such as Community Bag Racks — where customers can take or contribute reusable bags — and the “IMPerfect Fellas” programme further embed sustainability into everyday shopping. In 2024 alone, the sale of blemished but edible produce prevented over 1,095 tonnes of fresh food from going to waste.

Leveraging Technology for a Greener Future

Looking ahead, FairPrice Group has set clear and ambitious targets: to halve its Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and achieve operational net-zero by 2045 as part of our purpose to be Easy on the Planet. Technology plays a central role in this vision.

The Group’s “Store of Tomorrow” programme at Punggol Digital District is testing AI-powered solutions like digital price cards to eliminate paper waste and improve operational efficiency. FairPrice Group is also exploring the adoption of autonomous vehicles and electric-powered industrial vehicles within its fleet, reinforcing its role as a key contributor to Singapore’s Green Plan 2030. The journey forward is defined by a commitment to remain a key contributor to a greener Singapore, ensuring that every day is made a little better for the community and the planet alike.
